Malignant melanoma is a less common type of skin cancer than the two other types. About 11,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with malignant melanoma each year. Melanoma behaves differently to basal cell and squamous cell cancers. It can grow quickly and needs to be treated early.
A mole that changes in size, shape, colour, itching or bleeding should always be brought to the attention of a doctor. It may turn out to be fine but it is important to be vigilant.
Treatment for melanoma is to cut it out. Usually, further appointments are needed with a dermatologist to make sure everything is OK.
